Expert in Medical and Surgical Retina

Professor Pearce is Consultant Ophthalmologist and Vitreo-Retinal Surgeon at St Paul’s Eye Unit, Royal Liverpool University Hospital providing specialist services for AMD, Vitreo-Retinal surgery, Diabetic Eye Disease, Uveitis and Cataract surgery. He is Director of Northwest Eyecare Consultancy Ltd.

He has also been the principal/chief investigator for numerous international and national trials of novel treatments and therapies such as intravitreal injections of Vabysmo, Beovu, Lucentis, Eylea, Avastin and Ocriplasmin (Jetrea) and surgical management of AMD involving radiotherapy and Port Delivery system.

He is Director of the Clinical Eye Research Centre at St Paul’s Eye Unit and member of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists Professional Standards Committee. He represents the RCOPHTH at the DVLA Visual Standards Panel and is a nominated Specialist Clinical Expert Advisor to NICE for the appraisal of novel technologies including Vabysmo, Lucentis, Eylea, Ozurdex, Adalimumab Ocriplasmin (Jetrea) and intraocular radiotherapy. For the Department of Health, he is chair of the Advisory Committee on Dangerous Pathogens TSE Ophthalmic Sub-group.

Prof. Pearce is Honorary Professor in the Dept. of Eye and Vision Science at the University of Liverpool. In addition to delivering numerous invited international and national lectures Prof. Pearce has authored 3 National Guidelines, 3 Book Chapters  (Evidenced-based Management of Diabetes, Complications of Vitreo-retinal Surgery, Barton and Powers Clinical Negligence) and over 70 publications cited >1000 times.

He has trained many UK and international retinal specialists through St Paul’s Eye Unit fellowship programs, is Regional Advisor for Ophthalmology to Mersey Training Deanery, Mersey Deanery Program Director for Medical Ophthalmology and examiner for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists.

Prof Pearce has prepared expert medico-legal reports for over 18 years with an approximate 80:20 claimant/defendant ratio. He is invited Ophthalmology chapter author for the 5th Edition Clinical Negligence (2015, Powers & Barton).
